This spring forty-seven students, many of whom never set foot in a Pace classroom, earned an associate's
degree in telecommunications through a fully online program sponsored by the
National Coalition for Telecommunications and Learning (NACTEL).
NACTEL is an innovative industry-wide partnership with the purpose of designing, developing and
delivering online education and training to meet critical employment needs in the telecommunications industry.
The group met for the first time in 1997. Members of the NACTEL partnership include the Communications
Workers of America (CWA), Frontier/Citizens Communications, the International Brotherhood of Electrical
Workers (IBEW), Qwest Communications, SBC, and Verizon Communications.
Pace University, in close collaboration with the NACTEL Curriculum Committee, developed the A.S.
degree in Telecommunications and two certificates - Introduction to Telecommunications and Telecommunications
Essentials. Pilot classes for this groundbreaking program started in January 1999. The curriculum is constantly
revised to reflect changes in the industry; four new courses in telecommunications emerging technologies were
added this past year.
Initial funding for this project came from the
Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The project is managed by the
Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL).
