This writing is part of the Canterbury Tales text that has been cut off. The
illumination and the writing come from the beautiful and deluxe Ellesmere manuscript of
the Canterbury Tales, housed in the Huntington Library, in San Marino, California. It is
one of the few surviving illustrated copies of Chaucer's poem and may date to 1400, the
year of Chaucer's death, though probably it is not earlier than that (Dr. Driver) .
