BEOWULF
The name of the Geat hero, Beowulf, corresponds to a Beow or Beaw in
West Saxon genealogy. He is seen as the divine helper of man in his struggle with the elements
of evil. Here he is seen breaking Grendel's hand from his body. (Chambers, 46.)
