Who are the Danes?
The Danes are referred to in the poem as North-, South-, East-, and West-Danes, and as Bright-Danes, Spear-Danes, Ring-Danes; known also as friends of Ing and Scyldings (descendents of Scyld). At the time of the action of the poem the ruler of the Danes was Hrothgar.
