Important terms found in passage Beowulf Prepares for Battle Once Again.
- boar- a ferocious hog with no fear of death. The replica of a boar on armor will give
warrior boar's strength.
- boast- the pledge or vow a warrior makes which must be kept.
- chain mail- woven-linked metal worn under armor.
- comitatus- the agreement between a lord and his thanes. The lord provides food, shelter, and armor to his men in return for their protection.
- lair- cave, hideaway
- scop- a poet or story teller. an entertainer.
- sea cliff- a kenning for wave.
- thane- follower, retainer, or warrior.
- wergild-"man price." The price one must pay after killing in order to avoid retribution. The amount to be paid is determined by a lord.
