Glossary

• boar- a ferocious hog with no fear of death. The replica of a boar on armor will give warrior boar's strength.
• boast- the pledge or vow a warrior makes which must be kept.
• chain mail- woven-linked metal worn under armor.
• comitatus- the agreement between a lord and his thanes. The lord provides food, shelter, and armor to his men in return for their protection.
• lair- cave, hideaway
• scop- a poet or story teller. an entertainer.
• sea cliff- a kenning for wave.
• thane- follower, retainer, or warrior.
• wergild-"man price." The price one must pay after killing in order to avoid retribution. The amount to be paid is determined by a lord.
