Bio-sketch: Dr. Lixin Tao is a tenured professor and chairperson of the Computer Science Department of Pace University in New York. He received his PhD in Computer and Information Science from University of Pennsylvania in 1988, and conducted computer science research and teaching with Concordia University in Montreal for 13 years before he joined Pace University in 2001. His research interest includes cloud computing, Internet and Web computing, intelligent systems, software engineering, cybersecurity, parallel and distributed computing, and combinatorial optimization. He has published over 300 original research papers in refereed international journals and conference proceedings, and graduated a few dozens of quality PhD/DPS students. He is an IEEE senior member, and national ABET evaluator for computer science programs.
Education
Editor-in-Chief for Journal of Computer Science Research, ISSN: 2630-5151, an international research journal for algorithms, computer graphics, programming and programming languages, complex systems, and computer science theories; leading an editorial board of over 100 international domain experts, since 2018.
Developed PhD in Computer Science Program at Pace University in 2013, and assisted New York Institute of Technology in developing its PhD in Computer Science Program in 2018.
Developed MS in Enterprise Analytics program at Pace University in 2015.
Developed Pace University BS in Computer Engineering program in 2017, focusing on hardware-software co-design, embedded systems and IoT.
Director of PhD in Computer Science program, 2013-2017.
Director of Doctor Professional Studies in Computing (DPS-IT) program, 2015-2017.
In 2010-2012, leading ABET accreditation of Pace University BS-CS program, which was accredited by ABET for the full length.
National program evaluator of ABET for computer science.
Director and principle investigator for a three-year, $12 million research program, Environment for Portable Parallel Programming, funded by major IT companies and Strategic Technology Program of Industry, Science and Technology Canada, 1992 to 1995, leading seven senior researchers from Concordia University, McGill University, University of Montreal and Montreal Research Center for High Performance Computing in developing a portable parallel programming environment.
Pioneered in cloud computing research and development in 1990s, and contributed to delivering financial services to carrier servicemen. Sample work: “Shifting paradigms with the application service provider model”, IEEE Computer Magazine, October, 2001. pp.32-39. PDF download
In 2015-2019, extended knowledge engineering's industry standard OWL (Web Ontology Language) into Pace University Knowledge Graph by introducing custom relations beyond the is-a and part-of relations; and extended Stanford University project Protégé so domain experts could visually define concepts and custom relations with a flexible subset of math properties and encode domain knowledge for supporting knowledge base and knowledge-empowered AI, beyond the experiential limit of machine learning.
In 1981, inspired by Stanford University Prof. Nils J Nilsson's seminal book “The Mathematical Foundations of Learning Machines”, and in cooperation with a major metropolitan medical center, completed and published his MS-CS research of applying machine learning with the first generation neural networks to predict the diameter/severity of heart mitral stenosis with 22 health metrics with an accuracy of 93%. Contributions include efficient methods to introduce derived variables so a linear discriminant function can be trained to implement any complex nonlinear dichotomy hyperplane; and simplex method was used to improve the machine learning speed.
