JOEL A. MARTIN is the creator and trademark owner of Jazzical®, a marriage of classical and jazz. This innovative genre bridges the gap between classical and jazz while remaining true to both forms. Mr. Martin has released four Jazzical CDs to critical acclaim in such publications as TIME Magazine, The Washington Post, and Piano Today Magazine. And his Jazzical Arts-in-Education programs were featured in The New York Times.
2007 was a busy year for Joel as composer/pianist. He recorded his 5th CD entitled A Jazzical Christmas featuring the Brooklyn Youth Chorus in all original Christmas and Hanukkah music, to be released nationwide in 2008. Joel collaborated and performed in UNC Chapel Hill and Kennedy Center with famed operatic singer Kathleen Battle. He also debuted his 8 movement Requiem for Peace featuring the poem Caged Bird by Maya Angelou and 6 other compositions at Meymandi Hall, Raleigh, NC. Additionally he won the Gold Medal with singer Sharon Clark at the American Traditions Vocal Competition, part of the Savannah Music Festival. In December Jazzical went on tour for concerts in Russia and Kyrgyzstan.
Joel has performed as soloist with the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony, and Delaware Symphony; and the Springfield Symphony (MA) and Hartford Symphony Orchestras premiering Jazzical: Dueling Orchestras. He was the youngest competitor in the 1985 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and has toured Japan, Finland, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Germany, Austria, England, and France.
