Sudoku as a Constraint Satisfaction Problem

Sudoku is a compact CSP: every empty cell is a variable, each domain is a subset of digits 1–9, and row, column, and box constraints require distinct values.

The running puzzle

Every page uses this puzzle. Blue cells are the variables currently discussed. For example, fixed digits in row 1, column 3, and the upper-left box reduce r1c3 to {1,2,4}. The clues reduce r5c5 to the singleton {5}.

Binary and global formulations

A binary model adds Xi ≠ Xj for every pair of peers. A global model uses 27 AllDifferent constraints: nine rows, nine columns, and nine boxes.

Check: How many peers does a center cell have? Do not count a cell twice when it shares both a row and a box.
