Experimental Handwriting System

Pace CSIS is conducting a study to validate the individuality of handwriting using a characteristic set of handwriting features and to discover knowledge useful to forensic document examiners by performing statistical hypothesis testing. The work is expected to have a bearing on the admissibility of handwriting testimony in US courts.

The project has two phases. The first involves gathering handwriting samples and establishing databases of the samples with a Web interface to view and examine the handwriting samples. Gathering handwriting samples involves:

The second phase involves running experiments on the handwriting data using feature extraction (image processing) and machine learning techniques. However, the focus for at least the first semester, and possibly for the entire year depending on the team's progress, will be on the first phase.
