Telephones
Practical issues related to the use of telephones in India
Telephone numbers in India are not necessarily 7 digits.
Area codes, called citi codes in India, are not necessarily 3 digits. Bangalore, for example is 80 and Mysore 821.
Country code for India is 91.
Calls made within the same city code are called "local calls."
Calls made to another city code are called "STD calls." In this case you need to dial 0 first (not 1).
Calls made outside the country are called "ISD calls."
Your U.S. cell phone is of no use in India.
You will find public telephone booths everywhere. A call to U.S. costs about Rs 7 (15 cents)/minute.
To make a call from U.S. to India: 011+91+citi cide+telephone number. For example, a call to Mysore: 011 91 821 2541978.
To make a call from India to US: 001+area code+ telephone number. For example, a call to our office in Pleasantville: 001 914 773 3319.
