A warm summer breeze pushed several tendrils of hair across my face. Raising a weary hand, I swept the rebellious locks behind my ear. The light scent of oak trees made me pause and run my eyes along the thick canopy of treetops. Taking in the beautiful scene, my legs collapsed beneath me. I lay in a bed of flowers taking deep breaths to slow my heart. Thoughts flooded my mind: leaving home, images of recently deceased family, sounds of war. I knew I had to keep moving, but the more I willed myself up, the closer I inched toward blissful slumber. Even if I could only stay for a short time, I needed a few minutes of tranquility, a moment for peace.
The sound of soldiers forced my eyelids open. Grabbing my weapon, I jumped to my feet and left the narrow path that had been my guide for so long. The thick foliage of the forest would shield me from their search for a few moments. I knew escape was the only way of life for me now. Even as they followed, I knew my destiny was to walk earth's edge.
