Definition List
- GIF - Graphic Interchange Format
- The original picture format for the World Wide Web. It allows only 256 colors,
but has transparency, animation, and interlacing. GIF (pronounced JIF) is
currently mired in patent disputes as Unisys and Compuserve attempt to derive
income from the most popular image format on the Web.
- JPEG - Joint Photographic Experts Group
- A newer picture format invented to allow more colors in Web photographs.
While it allows 16.7 million colors, it does sacrifice some picture quality
to compress the graphic.
- PNG - Portable Network Graphic
- Newly invented to circumvent the problems with GIF and JPEG, PNG (pronounced
PING) is not yet an accepted format for Web pages.
