How Can We Compare Islamic Traditions and Customs

Introduction

How are women treated in our country?  How are women treated in other countries?    We will take a look at the traditions and customs of women in the Islamic religion around the globe.

 

Task

As a class, you will be divided up into pairs and take a comparison look at the different viewpoints of Islamic women.  As part of your team, you will read and explain the viewpoints of your distinct role. You will take on the roles that your articles represent and defend them to the best of your ability. You will also write a report about three to four pages on the Islamic religion and customs toward women in your specific viewpoint.  After that is done you will give an oral presentation.  

 

Process

1. Team #1 - You are the American tourist and you are learning about the Islamic traditions and customs for the first time.  You will click here, to read your article. Defend the viewpoint of the article to the best of your ability while also answering the following questions. 

    You will answer the following questions:

    a. How are the Islamic traditons different from the American customs?

    b. What are the advantages politically, of being an American women?

2. Team #2 - You are the Islamic female who grew up in the Middle East.  You are very proud of your customs and traditions.  You want to prove to everyone the viewpoints and advantages of your religion.  You will click here, to read your article.  Defend the viewpoint of the article to the best of your ability while also answering the following questions. 

    You will answer the following questions:

    a. How are the Islamic traditions different from American traditions?

    b. What are the benefits of being an Islamic female living in your country opposed to somewhere else?

3. Team #3 - You are the feminist, who has a staunch view of women rights.  You want to defend your actions about Islamic women and their traditions.  You will click here, to read your article.

    You will answer the following questions:

    a. What rights do Islamic women have opposed to American women?

    b. How would other women in other countries feel about their traditions?

4. Team #4 - You are the Islamic male who is in favor of traditons and customs for women.  You will click here, to read your article.

    You will answer the following questions:

    a. What are some of the problems that American women face opposed to Islamic women?

    b. What can American women learn from Islamic women?

Evaluation

You will be evaluated by your written presentation and your oral presentation.    Your  written presentation will be graded as a team, accordingly.   Your oral presentation will be graded on an individual basis and how strongly you can uphold your argument.

 Conclusion

Hopefully, we all can review all the points and tradtions of the Islamic religion and women.  In our teams we can all learn from the different viewpoints considered.
