What are we going to eat on

  "Fourth Grade Fun" day?

                        Introduction|Task|Process|Conclusion

                                                       Introduction:

Mr. Harders has been on the phone all day! He called each of your parents to tell them how hard you worked on the ELA exam. That's a lot of phone calls! He also told them that to honor the fourth graders, he is going to have Fourth Grade Fun day on Saturday. Every parent has agreed to send their child. He has made arrangements to have the entire school filled with video games, arcade games, roller coasters, and more! Every fourth grader will get the chance to play as much as they want! He's bringing all the great things from Jeepers and Sportstime to Grady School!

There's only one problem. Miss Grace doesn't work in the cafeteria on Saturdays! Without food or someone to prepare it, we can't have "Fourth Grade fun Day"! The fourth grade teachers have agreed to prepare the food, but you will have to do the shopping. We are going to need breakfast, lunch, and dinner food for the entire fourth grade. We have utensils and plates but no food! Do you think you could plan and purchase the food you would need to feed your classmates for the day? Mr. Harders left money, a note,  and a memo from the nurse for the breakfast, lunch, and dinner groups. Your menu and shopping list for your meal have to be presented to Mr. Harders by Friday for approval. Otherwise, there may not be a "Fourth Grade Fun" day!

                                  Your Task:

You will join one of three shopping groups: breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Your mission is to use your problem solving skills in order to:

  • plan the meal
  • shop for the meal
  • create a menu for the meal

Each group will have to work together to make good decisions and spend money wisely. You have to remember:

  • to stay within your budget
  • buy enough to feed all the students
  • offer food that will be appetizing for everyone
  • pay attention to the memo from the nurse along the way

Each member of the group will shop at one of three groceries stores and report back to the group. They are:

                                                                 The Process:

Day One:

  • Read the note from Mr. Harders.
  • Review the memo from the nurse.
  •     Take notes on only the information that will effect your shopping.
  •   Write down what conclusions you can make about your meal based on what you learned in the memo.

(Example: Suppose you are in a group that's responsible for dinner. You read in the memo that more than half of the fourth grade is allergic to corn. What could that mean for what you plan to offer for dinner?)

Day Two:

As a group, make a rough draft of what you should offer for your meal. (Note: When you eat in the cafeteria, Miss Grace always has a choice of what you will eat and drink)

This is where you do some brainstorming. List ideas from the group for what you will offer to eat and drink. Keep in mind everything you learned in the memo from the nurse yesterday.

Consider this: When we eat in the cafeteria, we have beverages, a main course, and a snack/dessert. I've noticed that Miss Grace keeps a fruit bowl out every time we eat in the cafeteria.

By the end of day two, you should have a good list of ideas.

Day Three:

Each group member will select which grocery store he/she will shop at. Each member will shop at either A and P, ShopRite, or Safeway. Everyone will be shopping through the weekly special sale flyer for their chosen grocery store. Before you shop, you must review the Helpful Guidelines page for each of the stores you will be shopping at.

As you shop:

  • look for the items on your brainstorming list.
  • write down the name, price, and size of the items as you find them in the sale flyer. (For example, Florida Natural Orange Juice, 64 oz. 2 for $4.00.)
  • if you see any items that could also be offered for your meal but are not on the brainstorming list, write them down as well. You will want to tell your group tomorrow.

Day Four:

Now, its time to report back to your group. Each group member will share what they found with the group.

As a group, take the time to review your information. Make the following decisions:

  • what will you need to have on your menu?
  • how much of each thing on your menu will you need? (Keep in mind: who you are feeding and the number of people you are feeding.)
  • Which store will you buy each item from? Will you need to shop at all three stores, two of the stores, or just one of the store? Take a close look at what you need and the prices among the stores.

Day Five:

Your group will now need to make calculations. Decide how much each item will cost based on the price and quantity you need.

You will be able to use the schools Tax exemption card. This means that you do not have to pay tax. But, you do have to stay within your budget.

By the end of day five, you have to determine if you have enough money to purchase everything you need for the meal that you are planning.

*If your group cannot find a way to stay within your budget, you may request a loan application meeting with Miss Wright to show good reason of why your group needs more money. You will have to prove that without more money, its impossible to offer a decent meal while shopping at these three stores. You will also need to have decided how much more money you will need..

If your loan request is denied, there must be some other choices your group can make. You will have to go back to your flyers and find alternatives to provide the meal with the given money.

Day Six:

Create the shopping list for your group.. Use a table that includes the following headings for each column:

  • Store Name
  • Item Name
  • quantity
  • price
  • total
  • size
Store Name Item Name Size Quantity Price (as listed in the flyer) Total

Ex. A and P

Florida Natural Orange Juice

64 oz. 6 2/$4.00 $12.00

On the bottom of the table, indicate the difference between the total cost and they money you have to pay with.

Ex. Total Cost: $56.30

     We pay: $60.00

      Difference: $3.70

Next, use the posterboard to create your menu. The menu should include

  • different categories for the meal you will offer (beverages, main course, snack/dessert)
  • the food being offered
  • the amount each student will be offered

Ex.  Beverages:

Orange Juice    ......1 glass per student

Tomato Juice    ......1 glass per student

*Get ready! Once your shopping list and menu are created, its time to turn in your proposal  to Mr. Harders! Have you planned your meal well enough to have Fourth Grade Fun Day?
