Introduction

Who were the ancient Egyptians?  Why are we learning about them?  After engaging in our project we will have learned about the geography of Egypt and how it affected their daily lives.  We will also learn about their values and beliefs and how we can relate their culture to our time.  So here we go!

The Task

Our task as historians is to "dive" into the past. You will do this, by exploring the areas of Egypt on different websites and in your group or team you will present an oral explanation of your findings and prepare a written report.

Process and Resources

  1. You have already been divided into pairs.  All students will complete the next step (#2).
  2. You and your partner will describe the importance of the Nile River and its many purposes.  You will also jot down three important achievements during the Old Kingdom of the Egyptian civilization.  To find this information, click on geography and timelines.   In "Map of Egypt" you will look at the picture and explain the importance of the cities surrounding the river.  Also, with background knowledge taught in class, you will be able to figure out the many purposes of this river.  For more help, you can click on  rivers.   To find out about the many achievements of the Old Kingdom of Egypt, you can click on "Time Frame" in the geography and timelines website.
  3. Teams 1, 2 and 3, click here.
  4. Teams 4, 5 and 6, click here.
  5. Teams 7, 8 and 9, click here.
  6. Teams 10, 11 and 12, click here.
  7. Each team will put together a three page report on their findings. In the written report, will be discussed the comparisons of Egyptian civilizations to today's civilization.   In the last half of the written report, you will compare your findings of the Egyptian civilization to today.  After review from teacher, each team will orally present their material and their findings.

Evaluation

Each team will be evaluated by their written presentation/essay (50%), the oral presentation as a team (25%), and how the information was organized and applicable  to today (25%).

Conclusion

Hopefully, through our projects we will all see the importance of learning about ancient civilizations, discovering their cultural practices and how similar they are to our own civilization.
