COURSE ADMINISTRATION

HOW THIS COURSE WILL BE RUN

This online course will be delivered asynchronously via the Web using the Blackboard system provided by Blackboard, Inc. That is to say, there are no scheduled meetings or class times, except for:

The final examination to be taken on campus at either the Pace NY campus or at the Grad Center in White Plains on December 16 (Friday) from 6:00pm-8:40pm. Room assignments will be announced. This exam will be open book and proctored. Students will be asked to present their Pace photo ID card. If you have a conflict with this date, please contact the instructor at least two weeks prior to the final to make alternate arrangements for taking the final.

SPECIAL NOTE:

Those of you who do NOT live in the New York City Metro area will have to make arrangements to have your final exam proctored. If this applies to you, please contact the instructor for further information.

THE COURSE SCHEDULE AND WEEKLY QUIZZES

Although this course is entirely asynchronous, we will follow a weekly schedule of reading assignments, problem exercises, and a 10-question quiz, which you will take online. During each week, you will be asked to follow these guidelines:

  • An ID and password that will allow you to gain access to course materials will be issued to each student. Basic instructions on how to use the Blackboard system, version 6 also will be made available. We will be using the "blackboard.pace.edu" server.
  • All weeks begin on Thursday and end on the next Wednesday. The week's materials are posted on the course Webpage by Thursday, 10:00am.
  • Students are expected to do the assigned reading during the week. Additional supporting materials, such as PowerPoint presentations, may also be posted in the "Assignment" section of the Blackboard 6 system.
  • Students are expected to do assigned exercises during the week. Students, however, are NOT required to submit assignments to the instructor. Solutions to exercises will be posted the following week.
  • Students are expected to take a weekly quiz by the end of each week (i.e. Wednesday). Quizzes are automatically scored and the scores are posted on the student's electronic grade book of the Blackboard system.
  • Students are urged to contact the instructor via email if they have questions. Every effort will be made to reply to your note within 24 hours. Students are also invited to call the instructor at home, if needed. My number is (937)-439-1513.
  • Students will be asked to complete two online course evaluation surveys, one at the mid-point of the course and one at the end. Your feedback will be important in determining the success of the course and identifying areas for improvement.

DATA APPLICATION PROJECT

All students will conduct and submit a database application project using Microsoft Access 2000 (or later release), or another recognized database management system, such as Oracle or MySQL.  See the "Database Application Project" link for details.
