The Virgin Mary with baby Jesus. Margery claimed she often felt herself in Mary's position, experiencing the pain and suffering a mother feels when seeing her child in distress. Christ's Crucifixion was the basis for Margery's outlandish acts of grief and sorrow. She believed that suffering was the means by which individuals drew closer to God, in which a sense of empathy would develop.
