Beowulf



He is the great warrior and adventurer in the epic poem Beowulf. He has the strength of many men and he has slain many monsters. In the poem he fights Grendel, Grendel's Mother, and a dragon.




Grendel's Mother



A she-monster who comes to Heorot to avenge the death of her son. She kills Aeschere and takes away Grendel's arm.




Aeschere



Hrothgar's beloved counselor who is killed by Grendel's mother.




Grendel



A monster who is referred to as a descendant of Cain. He attacks Heorot and kills many warriors over a 12 year period until his defeat in the hand of Beowulf.




Hrothgar



King of the Danes who built Heorot. He is being tormented by Grendel.




Unferth



He is Hrothgar's righthand man. He taunts Beowulf early in the poem and later lends Hrunting to him. He is a coward and is referred to as a brother-slayer.




The Dragon



The dragon is the last monster Beowulf fights.
