Tasks

Individual Roles

Teams of 3 will be formed and each team member will perform one of three roles:

  1. Number Cruncher - will use raw data to create Excel spreadsheets and graphs to be analyzed and used in the final presentation to Mr. Lee
  2. Economic Analyst - will read and analyze two articles and create an Inspiration Graphic Organizer summarizing the opposing positions of Business Week and National Geographic relative to the future supply of oil to the world.
  3. Political Analyst - will study the political effects of geography and political regimes on the supply of OPEC oil to the world. This team member will create an Inspiration Graphic Organizer which summarizes the main concerns and vulnerabilities.

Team

The entire team will create a PowerPoint presentation that convinces Mr. Lee that you understand all the dynamics of the petroleum industry's relationship with OPEC.

  • Your team should make some predictions about what will happen to demand for oil if the price per barrel, and subsequently the price per gallon at the pump, increases. Use your analysis of the graphs and data to infer your positon.
  • Your team should take one position about the world's future oil supply - will it be cheap or dear? Is there enough?
  • Your team should advise Mr. Lee of mid east countries which put the smooth delivery of petroleum at risk and why.

Your team's presentation should be delivered as if you are in the boardroom. It should be colorful, professional and contain some graphics. Maps, graphs and photos will add to the professional look of your presentation. You should keep your presentation to a maximum of 8 slides, 2 of which should be the cover slide and the bibliography or sources cited and used.
