Beowulf is an epic which dates from around 650 - 750 a.d. The original author of Beowulf is unknown, and for a long time the story was told by word of mouth through a scop. Beowulf is the story of the Danish people who are attacked by evil monsters. They suffer these attacks until a young Geat hero, who battles against evil, comes to their rescue. This hero is the perfect model of a warrior. Beowulf, the hero, possesses great strength, is tactful, and capable of overcoming any evil because of his benevolence. The concept of good versus evil is of great significance in this story. Also of importance are the Christian and pagan elements. A passage which contains all of these ideas, deals with Beowulf's preparation for his second battle.
