The workshop is supported by the National Science Foundation and the National Security Agency GenCyber Program. This two-week full-day program will be held from July 6th through July 17th at Pace University, in Pleasantville, NY. There is NO COST to apply for the program and the cost of attending will be covered by a flat-rate stipend to the participants!

The workshop will introduce fundamental concepts and various topic areas in cybersecurity, as well as related pedagogical methods. By the end of the program, the participants will be required to design an activity or course in cybersecurity that they will implement in their school the following year.

 

Objectives

 

 

 

 

o   Provide a professional development opportunity for high-school teachers to become familiar with diverse topics and fundamental concepts in cybersecurity, as well as with career opportunities in the field.

o   Explore new activities and courses to attract high-school students to cybersecurity.

o   Establish connections with high-school teachers to create a pipeline of cybersecurity students.

 

Content

 

Fundamental Concepts

o   Introduce fundamental concepts and principles in cybersecurity including security properties, threats and vulnerabilities, access control, and cryptography.

Topic Areas

o   Cover four topic areas: network security, web application security, computer forensics, and biometrics. 

o   Introduce both concepts and pedagogical tools for each area. 

Career Paths

o   Educate teachers about the various career paths in cybersecurity so that they can use the knowledge for student advisement.

Pedagogical Tools and Resources

o   Introduce participants to various pedagogical tools/resources for teaching cybersecurity to high-school students.

Activity/Course Design

o    Each participant will design a project to articulate a new activity or course in cybersecurity for high-school students, based on what would work best in their school.

Notification of acceptance will start on May 30th, 2015

Workshop dates:  July 6th through July 17th, 2015   (weekend break on both July 11th and July 12th)

 

Participant Financial Support

 

Each participant will receive a flat-rate stipend ($2000) at the end of the workshop to cover the cost of transportation, lodging, and other expenses of attending the workshop. To receive the stipend, the participant will be required to attend the workshop for its entire length and to complete the required activities. The workshop will provide breakfast and lunch for all participants.

 

Eligibility

 

The workshop is open to all full-time high-school teachers, preferably teaching in the science, technology, engineering, and math disciplines.

 

Program Requirements

 

Participants are required to:

o   Complete all workshop sessions

o   Design a cybersecurity-related activity or course for students in their school by the end of the workshop

o   Commit to engage students in their school in the cybersecurity-related activity or course developed during the workshop

Applicants are required to complete the following documents and email them directly to gencyber@pace.edu. The applications will be reviewed and the applicants will be notified by May 30th, 2015. Please apply as soon as possible if interested. Space is limited.
