Introduction

It’s that time of year again…that’s right the 8th grade picnic.  This year Mrs. Knight is asking that the 7th graders at Highlands Middle School plan the event.

It will be your job to plan the event – from Cooking to Decorations to Entertainment.  Mrs. Knight would like a proposal from each group by Friday.  All she is telling you is that there will be 400 students and 35 adults at the picnic.  She would like to remind you that the day should be full of games, music, and food.  (It is a graduation celebration after all!)

Congratulations Class of 2003!!

Task

n      Your first job is to choose jobs.  Each of you know your strengths and weaknesses.  Click on the link to read the job descriptions. Entertainment.   Decorator.  Chef.  Party Planner.   The major hurdle will be to come together and make a power point presentation.  Included in the presentation must be spreadsheets with your budget, fliers for the games, and any other information to prove to Mrs. Knight that your team is the team to pick.

Process

This is a team project, and you have been assigned into groups of four.  Each group will do the following:

      1. You will go online and research games to have the 8th graders play while at the picnic
      2. You will go online and research DJ’s versus Boom Box
      3. Once you have set up the games and music selections, it is time to figure out when to start cooking

a)     Remember we need to be back at Highlands by 1:50 p.m.

      1. When each person has done their research it will be the groups responsibility to make a presentation for

     Mrs. Knight

Evaluation

Your project will be graded on the following criteria:

      1. How well do you follow instructions?
      2. How well do your spreadsheets and fliers reflect the needs of the picnic?
      3. How easy will the final presentation be for Mrs. Knight to view?
      4. Did you use your teacher resource wisely?

Conclusion

The skills that you learn in math class do have applications in the real world, and the Internet is a great resource for finding things that you need, even when you didn’t know that you needed them.  How would you answer the following questions:

Did you have any idea that there were so many different things incorporated into having a successful picnic?

Would it have been easier to have done your calculations and fliers by hand, as opposed to a spreadsheet, or publication program?

How about if, after giving your presentation, Mrs. Knight informed you there were going to be 100 more people coming?

How difficult would it have been to keep track of the inventory, and budget, of your purchases if you had not used a spreadsheet?
