Founded in 1922 and incorporated in 1946, Mrs. Myers Chocolates is family owned and celebrating its 75th anniversary. The founder, Ethel Myers, always loved baking and learned to make fudge in her high school home economic class. Her love and enthusiam for making candy as well as her brilliant ideas and experiments quickly resulted in a strong demand for snacks from her co-workers. These same co-workers may be the catalyst that helped to spring Mrs. Myers Chocolates.
Ethel married a pharmacist, Jonathan Rutledge, and soon after, by the
encouragement of her co-workers, starting bringing her delicatessens to the
store's candy department for sale. This provided an extra means of income
for the family and acted as a marketing tool for the family business. Soon,
she was able to quit her job and devote herself fulltime to the candy company,
which was now selling in downtown department stores and businesses.
Over the years, Mrs. Myers Chocolates has become a local legend in southern
Indiana and northern Kentucky that specializes in high quality chocolate
candy and related products such as candy covered almonds, dinner mints and more.
Her two grandsons, Dennis and George Rutledge are now the chief operators of the
company.
