This Webquest is for 5th/6th Grade Social Studies Students.

 

This webquest is designed to supplement existing information
about mountain regions, not introduce it.

 
 
New York State Standards: Social Studies:  Standards 1 and 3
English Language Arts:  Standards 1, 2 and 3
   
Prerequisite Knowledge: Technology - Students must have basic computer knowledge and know how to use links, scrolling, back buttons and mouse.  Students must be familiar with creating a PowerPoint presentation.

Notetaking - Students should know how to take clear, concise notes and paraphrase information.

Subject Area - Students should already have background information about the history of the westward expansion for both mountain ranges, the time periods they took place in and some of the historical events. 

   
Lesson Duration: 2 weeks of 40 minute classes

The first week is used for group meetings, organization and collecting data. 
The second week is devoted to creating the PowerPoint Presentation.

Suggested Post Lesson Activity After a full discussion on the different PowerPoint presentations, each student can write a short essay, poem, song or journal entry on the similarities and differences they noticed in the two mountain cultures.

ELA Standard 1 - Students will read, write, listen, and speak for information and understanding.

ELA Standard 2 - Students will read, write, listen, and speak for literary response and expression.

ELA Standard 3 - Students will read, write, listen, and speak for critical analysis and evaluation.
