The United
Way-Pace University Not-for-Profit Management Center
is a partnership formed in 1995 between United Way of
Westchester and Putnam and the Michaelian Institute of
Public Policy and Management of Pace University in White
Plains. The Center’s mission is to respond to the needs
of the not-for-profit community by enhancing the management
effectiveness and efficiency and policy making abilities of
not-for-profit organizations in Westchester and Putnam
counties. By training an average of 400 professionals
a year, the Management Center provides the not-for-profit
community with high-quality and relevant learning
opportunities at an affordable cost.
Pace University
faculty, special consultants and trainers are
secured by the Center to provide educational
and technical assistance by offering courses,
seminars and workshops in addition to management
assistance, year around. The Center offers these
learning opportunities to human service professionals
at very affordable fees, and in addition, it makes
available full and partial scholarships for
agencies/programs that do not have budgets
for staff training.
The Center is able
to maintain these affordable fees through a special
partnership with a range of community partners
including organizations providing technical
assistance, the business community and the support
from the United Way.
The Center is also
a co-founding member of the Westchester Not-For-Profit
Technology Council and in this role it continues to
provide technical related training opportunities such
as “Creating a Technology Plan” and “The Accidental
Tecchie” . This June 2004, the Council will present
“Website, Technology and Fundraising Issues for
Nonprofits” which will be made possible through a
special collaboration with the Pro-Bono Partnership
and JP Morgan Chase Bank.

The Pace University MPA
program has published a guide that provides practical
information about social entrepreneurship (SE) for nonprofit
professionals, particularly in human services. Its focus is
on practical information on how to start and expand
entrepreneurial efforts in the nonprofit world, while it also
provides references to core materials that explain the larger
context and supporting concepts of SE.
