As a student did you ever say to a teacher "Why do I need to know this ?" or "In the real world do they use _________?" The unit on good health and nutrition is an important life long topic that is a major part of our lives. The major reason why teaching good health and nutrition is so terribly important is becuse of Student Eating Facts like these:

35% of elementary school-age children eat no fruit, and 20% eat no vegetables on a given day.
27% of children 6-11 years old are considered obese.
12% of school-aged children reported skipping breakfast.

The unit on Good Health and Nutrition consists of four major assignments that are one week or more in length. Each of the assignments will begin to teach you more about your personal health and nutrition. At the end of each activity there will be an assessment exercise that will help you become aware of your health and nutrition knowledge. Learning about the important relationship between good health and nutrition is the first step in living longer. Read on and let's begin the journey to good health and nutrition.

The Food Guide Pyramid/Student's Food Log


In this assignment, you will are asked for one week to keep an online food log of your daily diet. The data is collected on the Student's Food Log Worksheet and then entered online in the Student's Food Log Form . After each meal, place all food consumed in their appropriate food group, calculate total number of servings, and then analyze their diet compared to the USDA's Food Guide Pyramid and Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Place all the nutritional label information of your favorite snack food in the Nutritional Food Labeling Form and then analyze your diet compared to the USDA's Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA),Food Guide Pyramind, and Dietary Guidelines for Americans. In addition, you will go to the USDA Nutrient Database for Standard Reference and analyze the nutritional value of healthier alternative snack foods.

In this lesson, you are asked to analyze the nutritional value of your favorite fast food restaurant items. You are placed in a hypothetical situation that allows you to eat only fast food for a whole day. The data is collected on the Student's Fast Food Survey Worksheet and then entered online in the Student's Fast Food Survey Form. After each meal, you will perform a number of steps. First, you will analyze your food choices by placing all food consumed in the appropriate food group, calculate total number of servings, and then be asked to compare your diet to the USDA's Food Guide Pyramid and Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Second, you will go to the CyberDiet's Fast Food Quest and analyze the nutritional value of your fast food meal.

The data is collected on the Manager Of The Month Worksheet and then entered online in the Manager Of The Month Form. While researching, you will perform a number of steps. First, you will analyze your new healthier fast food item by placing all food contents in the appropriate food group, calculate total number of servings, and then be asked to compare your new item to the USDA's Food Guide Pyramid and Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Second, you must analyze and calculate the nutritional value of your new menu item by researching its contents in the USDA Nutrient Database for Standard Reference
